The ELO (Obligatory Logistics Envelope) is now officially mandatory for all shipments moving between the United Kingdom and France as of Monday, 20th April.
Originally introduced in spring 2025 for goods moving through the Smart Border between the United Kingdom and the European Union, ELO has already been in operation for some time and is now a fully embedded part of the UK/France border crossing.
At Caledonian Freight, we have been working with ELO well ahead of this mandate, ensuring our operations and customers were already aligned long before it became compulsory.
What does ELO do?
ELO streamlines the border crossing process by consolidating all required shipment information and declarative formalities—such as ENS, import, export, and transit declarations—into a single barcode.
This includes the requirement for a valid ICS2 Entry Summary Declaration (ENS), alongside either an import declaration or a transit document, all of which are linked within the ELO. By bringing these elements together, ELO ensures that all necessary pre-border formalities are completed in advance.
All trucks—whether loaded or empty—are required to present a valid ELO barcode when crossing the Smart Border.
How does it work?
During transit, the system conducts a risk analysis, with drivers able to monitor their clearance status via display screens before arrival. These screens direct vehicles into one of two lanes:
Green lane – all checks are complete; the driver can exit the port immediately.
Orange lane – further checks may be required or clearance is still in progress.
What does this mean for customers?
No additional action is required. As ELO has already been fully integrated into our operations, Caledonian Freight customers can continue to rely on the same smooth and efficient service they are used to.
We remain committed to delivering fast, reliable overland transport solutions between the UK and Europe. If you would like to learn more about ELO or discuss your logistics requirements, our team is always on hand to help.
